This November, WorkWise for Screen is hosting The Clause Forge: a series of one-day, roundtable hackathon events in four cities across the UK: London, Cardiff, Edinburgh & Belfast. Each day, people from across the screen sector (ranging from legal experts, producers, HR specialists, and trade body representatives) will come together to co-create and refine wording suitable for contracts and policies that encourage good working principles and compliance with CIISA standards.
All sessions will take place from 9:45 AM to 5:00 PM, with tea, coffee, and pastries served upon arrival. Lunch and refreshments will be provided throughout the day. Join us afterwards for an optional networking drinks reception to connect and unwind.
The goal? To ensure everyone in our industry has access to model wording to help create contracts and policies that reflect good working principles:
• Fair pay
• Healthy workplaces
• Clear communication
• Inclusivity
• Ethical practice
You don’t need to prepare anything before the event, but you’d be most welcome to bring examples of good (or bad) wording you’ve found that might help us create the best possible new resources for the sector.
Like other hackathons, this is a time-constrained, intensive event where we will work together to improve a set of prepared sample paragraphs. Your feedback on which words are helpful, and which are confusing will assist us in creating the best possible versions for publication.
The day will be facilitated by Programme Director, Keith Arrowsmith – an experienced solicitor famous for his engaging, fun events (that finish on time!)
Once all the events have occurred, we will compile all the work and prepare a final set of resources for publication. We will also create guidance notes to explain each paragraph and, if more than one version has been produced, how to determine which one to use.
It’s about creating usable, plain English paragraphs that can be easily used in contracts, policies, and guidance across film, TV, animation, VFX, games, and beyond. By joining, you’ll be part of a collective effort to close resource gaps, avoid duplication, and help embed better, fairer working practices across the screen industries.
