Introduction
Why Do We Need to Think About Human Rights Risks and Impacts in the Screen Industries?
- The risks exist: Ignoring them does not make them go away
- Legalisation and penalties: Companies (including broadcasters) are increasingly required to understand human rights risks in their operations and supply chains and to take action to prevent, mitigate and remediate negative impacts
- Reputation: A poor reputation can make it harder to employ talented people and harder to win commissions
- Long-term sustainability of the sector: To avoid an exodus of talent from the industry, it is essential that businesses meet at least meet minimum basic standards but ideally provide ‘good’ jobs
Human Rights Belong to Every Individual
They are...
- Universal: Everyone has them as a result of being human
- Inherent: We are born with them
- Inalienable: They cannot legitimately be taken away from us
